When the Kiowa Native Americans migrated south through what is now Glacier National Park, Montana, the area was heavily populated with Blackfoot Native Americans and grizzly bears,  The Blackfoot word for grizzly bear sounds somewhat like Kiow-a.  Like so many times, that’s not what the Kiowa called themselves, but it ended up being what everybody else called them.  I’m sure my Kiowa calls herself something like “She Who Must be Obeyed.”  We usually call her a goof.
